New Delhi, June 29: In the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the role of sports in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of Assam, referring to the Bodoland CEM Cup as a beacon of unity and hope.
The Prime Minister praised the football tournament for its efforts to promote peace, inclusivity, and community development throughout the BTR.
Modi stated, "Bodoland is emerging with a fresh identity and vigor. The enthusiasm and confidence of the youth are evident on the football pitch. The Bodoland CEM Cup is more than just a competition; it symbolizes a celebration of unity and hope."
This tournament is organized across various administrative levels, including Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs), BTCLA Constituencies, Districts, and the Council Level, ensuring broad participation and accessibility. It aligns with initiatives such as football academies and the involvement of Bodoland FC in national competitions like the Durand Cup.
"Over 3,700 teams and approximately 70,000 players are participating, including a significant number of young women! These figures reflect a transformative change in Bodoland, which is increasingly shining on the national sports map," Modi remarked.
He also acknowledged the accomplishments of local footballers, including Halicharan Narzary, Durga Boro, Apurba Narzary, and Manbir Basumatari, who are becoming symbols of Bodoland’s evolving identity on the national stage.
"These players are not just athletes; they represent a new generation that has propelled Bodoland into the national spotlight," Modi added.
In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recognized the significant changes occurring in the BTR.
“The Bodoland CEM Cup, once unimaginable in this region, showcases how effective leadership can channel the youth's potential towards constructive endeavors rather than violence,” Sarma expressed on a social media platform.
Sarma credited the region's peaceful transformation to Prime Minister Modi’s dedication to the Northeast, stating, “The shift of BTR from a center of insurgency to a hub of peace in the last five years exemplifies the commitment of Adarniya Pradhan Mantri @narendramodi Ji towards the North East.”
On the previous day, BTC Chief Pramod Boro announced plans to build a stadium in each of the 40 assembly constituencies at a cost of Rs 5 crore per stadium, in honor of Bodo leader Bir Chilagang Basumatary during his 28th death anniversary at Banshigaoan, Kokrajhar.
It is noteworthy that the BTC is preparing for upcoming elections, with all participating parties, including BJP and UPPL, opting to contest independently.
